Why stay in Mount Albert?

Mount Albert is a leafy, established suburb in Auckland's inner west — quieter than the CBD, but with the city, Eden Park and the motorway all close by. It's home to Mount Albert Grammar School (MAGS), Unitec's Mount Albert campus and one of Auckland's volcanic cones, with Westfield St Lukes and the restaurants of Kingsland right next door.

Coffee & groceries

The Little French Cafe — good coffee and French-inspired patisserie, about five minutes' walk from The Fern.

New World — the nearest supermarket, also around five minutes on foot, with pretty much everything you'll need.

Westfield St Lukes — supermarkets, shops, a food court, restaurants and a cinema.

Walks & outdoors

Ōwairaka / Mt Albert summit — a short climb for views across the city.

Western Springs Park — a lakeside loop next to Auckland Zoo and MOTAT.

Point Chevalier Beach — the closest beach for a walk. For swimming, head to the North Shore, or west to Piha for surf.

Eat

UMU (469 New North Rd, Kingsland) — wood-fired sourdough pizza.

Nanny's Eatery (492 New North Rd, Kingsland) — Jamaican food and rum.

Ada (454 Great North Rd, Grey Lynn) — a seasonal share-plate menu with strong New Zealand roots.

Cazador (854 Dominion Rd, Mount Eden) — intimate, with a menu unlike anywhere else.

Drink

Bar Martin — our local: a relaxed Mount Albert wine bar with natural wines, craft beer and a cosy courtyard.

The Portland Public House — a lively Kingsland bar with live music and pub food; handy before or after Eden Park.

Pocket Bar — a Grey Lynn favourite with great cocktails and a courtyard.

Kind Cafe — a bright Morningside café with mocktails, kombucha and non-alcoholic drinks.
